The first fans from the archives of the original house were akin to small portable paintings. Through this collaboration, François Mascarello offers a contemporary reimagining of these hand-fans.
Like fragments of a large fresco, each hand-fan in the collection tells an abstract landscape
As both artist and artisan, François Mascarello creates pieces where the gesture of the hand imparts sensitivity and fragility. Here, the patchwork of silks, carefully sourced from around the world by François, gives richness in texture, color, and movement to each creation.
Know How
In line with his work on the 'Wild Silk' series, François began by composing an abstract landscape on the computer, which he then transposed onto paper by painting it in oil. These initial paper works are then transformed into textile through fine strips of silk selected from François' collection, cut, and hand-sewn one by one onto a silk base using the invisible stitch technique.
